چکیده

We report the first observations of an astronomical object using a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) device, a pixel detector with intrinsic energy resolution in the optical wavelength range. The Crab pulsar was observed using a 6 × 6 array of Tantalum STJs at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. Each array element provides photon counting capability recording up to ∼ 10 3 photons pix −1 s −1 with an arrival time accuracy of about 5 µs, and providing a wavelength resolution of about 100 nm. We derive a photometrically resolved light curve which, however, shows no significant colour index variations with pulsar phase.

The Crab optical and ultraviolet polarimetry

Polarisation measurements of pulsars and of their pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are uniquely able to provide deep insights into the highly magnetised relativistic environment of young, rotationpowered isolated neutron stars (INSs). Besides the radio band, optical observations are primarily suited to providing such insights. The first INS for which optical polarisation observations were performed i...

Optical Pulse Polarization of the Crab Pulsar

The strong optical emission of the Crab pulsar allows us to study the polarization properties in detail. Optical pulsed emission can best be understood as synchrotron radiation of relativistic electron-positron pairs in the outer magnetosphere. We calculate the polarization properties of the optical pulses based on the outer gap model, which has explained much of the observed properties of this...

Optical and infrared observations of the Crab Pulsar and its nearby knot ⋆

Aims. We study the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Crab Pulsar and its nearby knot in the optical and in the infrared (IR) regime. We want to investigate how the contribution from the knot affects the pulsar SED in that regime, and examine the evidence for synchrotron self-absorption in the IR. We also draw the attention to the predicted secular decrease in luminosity of the Crab Puls...

Optical polarisation of the Crab pulsar: precision measurements and comparison to the radio emission

The linear polarisation of the Crab pulsar and its close environment was derived from observations with the high-speed photo-polarimeter OPTIMA at the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope in the optical spectral range (400–750 nm). Time resolution as short as 11 μs, which corresponds to a phase interval of 1/3000 of the pulsar rotation, and high statistics allow the derivation of polarisation detail...
